We few, we happy few

Earlier this week I was sick in bed for 3 days straight.  I took that oppertunity to watch HBO’s excellent mini-series Band of Brothers.  It is based on the Stephen Ambrose novel of the same name.  Band of Brothers follows Easy Company of the 101 Airbourne Division from it’s basic training in Toccoa, Georgia through the end of the second World War.  It was produced by both Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks who took an interest in the war after filming Saving Private Ryan.

In my opinion this is the single greatest piece of art ever put on television.  I don’t know if it counts as a television show since it is a mini-series and didn’t run in seasons but every time I watch Band of Brothers (about once a year) I am struk with a great sense of pride and emotion.  I think this is what great art should do, and I’ve gotto say that there isn’t much on else on TV that has ever accomplished this.

If you haven’t seen this series, do yourself a favor and take the time to sit down and watch it.  It’s not just for history buffs of fans of the war genre, it will touch anyone who watches it.  Go rent it today, or better yet buy a copy for yourself, because you will want to appreciate this piece of genius over and over again.
