Jumping the Shark

The Unban Dictonary defines Jump the Shark as: a term to describe a moment when something that was once great has reached a point where it will now decline in quality and popularity.
Origin of this phrase comes from a Happy Days episode where the Fonz jumped a shark on water skis. Thus was labeled the lowest point of the show.

There are countless examples of this happening, it has happened in almost every television show since the start.  A few of the long running shows that most generally agree never jumped the shark are Seinfeld, M.A.S.H., and the Soprano’s.

I’m wondering if The Office has now in it’s 4th season made the jump.  I hate to say it because I love the show so much but I’m worried.  Bringing Ryan back as a temp, the Michael and Holly relationship, Jim and Pam having trouble with their relationship.  All of these seem out of place and a little bit forced.

That being said, I’m not giving up hope.  I’m hoping the writers are phoning it in and I’ll look back and think All’s Well that Ends Well.

By the way, my wife is still losing sleep over the possibility of Jim and Pam breaking up.  I think it would be such a waste and disappointment to have us wait 3 season for them to get together only to break them up so quickly.
